The orientation process of particles in sediments in a magnetic field is considered with the help of a theoretical model that takes into account the rheological properties of sediments (especially elasticity, plasticity and viscosity). The initial fixation of post-depositional detrital remanent magnetization is shown to take place due to plastic properties. Long-time changes of post-depositional detrital remanent magnetization are again shown to be connected with the development of `truly viscous' processes in sediments.
