Relationships between wave propagation and plasmaspheric hiss are studied. The model employed is based on a two-dimensional code modified to include a realistic plasmapause and density variation within the plasmasphere. The wave growth and damping along individual ray paths are also computed. It is demonstrated that the observed frequency spectrum and polarization of plasmaspheric hiss not only are controlled by the relative rates of cyclotron growth and Landau damping but also are strongly influenced by the wave propagation characteristics
