The equation of rotational motion of a gyroscope in a given gravitational field is obtained from a kinematical consideration combined with the equivalence principle. The Lagrangian is constructed which leads to this equation and also to the equation of its orbital motion. The resulting equations are found to be equivalent to those given by Papapetrou and Schiff who, in the derivation, made use of the relation for energy-momentum conservation δ Tμν/δ xν=0.
