The sensitivity of the Strehl criterion (SC) to the value, type, and spatial frequency of the optics errors is investigated. It is shown that the information content of the SC is lost when the variance of the wavefront aberrations W¯ exceeds the value (1/8)λ and SC < 0.6 as a result of the dissipation of energy from the diffraction-limited core of the image. The ratio of spot sizes (of the actual to the ideal) is proposed as an alternative criterion of optics quality.
