The present 'global atmospheric electric circuit' model incorporates the effects of both volcanic and anthropogenic aerosol particle (AP) pollution, as well as the ionization due to coronal discharges generated by intense electric fields beneath thunderclouds. The effects of solar activity and of stratospheric aerosol particles (SAPs) on circuit parameters are studied. Attention is given to the cases of AP concentration enhancement over the Northern hemisphere, and SAP enhancement effects on global resistance, current, and ionospheric potential. The major influence on the global circuit is that of solar activity.
