A study of the results of a recent coordinated analysis of riometer data taken during 60 'substorm events' in IQSY (1964-1965) and IASY (1969) leads to the conclusion that auroral absorption is distributed nonuniformly in longitude, thereby lending support to earlier results based on a study of f min. It is suggested that this nonuniform distribution must be considered if valid inferences are to be drawn about the large scale temporal and spatial distribution of energetic particle precipitation.
