The concentration of perylene increases regularly with depth in a radiometrically dated sediment core from Mountain Pond, Coburn Mountain, Maine, U.S.A. This concentration profile was fit to simple reaction kinetic models which indicate that perylene forms in this core either by a first order reaction characterized by a rate constant of 0.012 yr -1 or by a second order reaction characterized by a rate constant of 0.0013 nmole -1 g yr -1 .
