Velocities of compression (υp) and shear (υs) elastic waves are extrapolated to high pressure by using the seismic parameter φ = υp2 - (4/3) υs2 and the Debye temperature θ expressed in terms of these velocities. The pre dependences of φ and θ are derived from the equation of state. A universal correction is introduced to improve the accuracy of the extrapolation. The values of νp and νs are calculated for NaCl and CsCl up to 300 kbar, and for MgO and Al2O3 up to 400 kbar. The discrepancies between the calculated νs and ultrasonic data are no more than 3% for NaCl and CsCl and less than 0.1% for MgO and Al2O3. The values of νp are in better agreement with the experimental data.
