It is assumed that the continual creation of matter is accompanied by the creation of entities of zero rest-mass and negative energy in such a way that 4-momentum is conserved at each creation event. The entities, which are called gravitinos, have the properties of Synge's 'attractive impulses'. The contributions of gravitinos to the energy-momentum tensor give rise to McCrea's zero-point stress and, in addition, to a zero-point energy. An argument of quantum-theoretical character is used to show that the annihilation of matter by gravitinos is relatively unlikely to occur in an expanding universe. It is suggested that the connexion with quantum theory can be developed by identifying the gravitino as a neutrino of negative energy.
