The relationship of plate behavior to mantle convection is discussed, addressing three questions: (1) why do plates move horizontally as quasi-rigid bodies; (2) what drives them; (3) how do they affect the thermal state and evolution of the mantle. Previous attempts to synthesize convection and plate models are reviewed, and a highly idealized lithosphere-mantle model by Jacoby (1982) is discussed whose main result is the crucial importance of lateral decoupling of the plates from their neighbors. Possibilities of simulating the system more realistically on the basis of earlier models are discussed.
