Synthetic profiles are generated from a sunspot model atmosphere which accounts for such physical parameters as magnetic field amplitude and inclination angle, by generalizing the inversion routine proposed by Auer et al. (1977) for vector magnetic field determination from Stokes profiles to include magnetooptical and damping effects. The magnetic field amplitude and direction are always recovered with good accuracy when these quantities are constant in the model atmosphere, and the values recovered in those cases where the magnetic field vector should vary monotonically with optical depth are always intermediate between those corresponding to the top and bottom of the atmosphere. The differences between synthetic and best-fit profiles are in many cases able to characterize the physical situation being considered.
