The ionospheric refraction of HF signals from low orbit satellites is investigated. It is shown that refraction effects on values of mean field height determined by the quasi-transverse Q-T method using the 40 MHz records is negligible. It is shown that this conclusion is supported by qualitative analysis for Kurukshetra and Calcutta where more than 80% of the Q-T points have been found to fall within the range of 250-450 km for the mean field height, though actual refraction errors have not been calculated for these stations. Finally, it is noted that only for special locations where the mean field range of 250-450 km is limited to very narrow latitudinal range and the Q-T occurs at low elevations angles, are the effects significant and taken into account.
