Published hourly values of the geomagnetic horizontal field (H) recorded at the Bangui magnetic observatory, Nigeria, in 1958, the year of highest known solar activity, are reanalyzed to give harmonic amplitudes instead of daily ranges. Nighttime contribution to S(H) tends to disappear under this new form of analysis. Since removal of Dst does not completely remove the effects of the disturbance in the ambient field at night, it is suggested that the usual geomagnetic mechanics of the atmospheric dynamo account for the daily variations.
