In the present paper the results of a study of the depletion of stellar radiation during its passage through the atmosphere and the blocking of part of it by the spectrograph-slit are reported. The spectral range is 375-900 nm. The atmospheric scattering plus absorption at the ESO is given. A multidisciplinary approach comprising astrometry, astronomical spectroscopy, advanced integral calculus, meteorology, and atmospheric optics is followed for solving the transmittance problem at the spectrograph slit.
