We demonstrate, by using the recent experimental results on the 'sputtering' rates of water ice by energetic protons, that significant fluxes of heavy atoms can be eroded from Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These atoms may play an important role in contributing to an atmosphere around Ganymede. If they can escape from the satellites and be ionized, they can be important contributors to the heavy ions that may dominate the plasma centrifugal distortion of the Jovian magnetosphere.
