Quarter-hourly ionograms of Kodaikanal (Geo. Mag. Lat: 0.6 deg N: Dip: 3.5 deg N) for a six year period (1964-1969) have been studied to investigate the characteristics of the two basic forms of equatorial spread-F: range and frequency type spread-F configurations. It is noticed that both range and frequency spread configurations show a positive correlation with solar activity and the occurence patterns of range and frequency spread show a significant correlation. In view of the observed close similarity between the characteristics of range and frequency spread, a preliminary study of the transition from range to frequency spread on a number of nights showed that on many occasions range spread gradually decays into frequency spread supporting the argument of King (1970) that frequency spread is a decay product of range spread. However, on some occasions, it is noticed that the transition from range to frequency spread occurs with a discontinuity in spread-F activity, indicating no association between the two.
