Damping constants for p-d electron transitions are obtained with a model combining Smirnov-Roueff and Van der Waals interaction potentials, and the validity of the model is tested with experimental data on the shift of spectral lines disturbed by neutral perturbers. Line broadening by neutral perturbers is described, and two parallel formulas for broadening and shift of a line are obtained using the Baranger impact theory. The results are applied to the interactions of Na D lines with H and He, the shift and width of lines caused by He and Ar are calculated, and damping constants are derived for six IR solar Fraunhofer lines. It is shown that a Smirnov-Roueff potential provides a better understanding of line shift and broadening by light neutral perturbers, while a Van der Waals potential yields better results for heavy perturbers.
