Some dynamic implications of separate convection systems in the upper and the lower mantle of the Earth are investigated. It is shown that the horizontal scale of convection cells in the lower mantle is likely to determine the scale of flow in the upper mantle. This does not preclude the nearly independent realization of convection cells with horizontal dimensions comparable to the depth of the upper mantle.
