From a comparison of simultaneous occultation measurements in the Schumann-Runge and Lyman-alpha ranges made by the satellite Intercosmos-11, the densities of an additional efficient Lyman-alpha absorbing constituent in the winter-thermosphere are deduced. The results, indicating a remarkable thermospheric water vapor content, are supported by the presence of anomalously high temperatures in this height region during the measurement.
