It is shown that when the generalized magneto-ionic formulae (Sen and Wyller, 1960) are used, Bennett and Dyson's (1978) expression for the absorption of a radio wave reduces to that obtained using the Appleton-Lassen formulae, provided the Appleton-Lassen magneto-ionic parameter Z(AL) is replaced by 5/2 x Z(m), where Z(m) is the mean parameter. The result is not restricted to vertical incidence propagation and, since it is based on the ray path obtained when there are no collisions, it may be readily applied to oblique propagation in inhomogeneous media where it is difficult to apply full wave theory. Some cases of transverse and longitudinal propagation in a linear layer with constant gyro and collision frequencies have been considered and the absorption calculated both analytically and using the above approximation.
