Solar Activity Cycles: Sunspots, Sunspot Groups: Distribution

Scientific paper

Data on the fluctuation index and indices of "perturbations" for Wolf numbers and a list of their strong fluctuations are given for 1986 - 1987. The beginning of the current cycle is characterized by the greatest number of very large sunspot groups (with mean area S¯ > 1500 m.s.h.). Latitudinal and longitudinal distributions of sunspot groups from October 1986 to August 1988 are analysed. It is noted that the solar activity level is significantly higher in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere.
