Two numerical methods for correcting observed spectral line profiles for the effect of the instrument profile are examined: the Burger-van Sittert technique and Fourier transformation with regularization. It is shown that both methods yield similar results in the case of a spectral line whose half-width is at least twice as large as the half-width of the instrument profile. However, for a line with a narrower profile, Fourier transformation with regularization is found to yield a better solution than the Burger-van Sittert technique.
