The total electron content data derived from measurements of the Faraday rotation of 136 MHz signals at Tokyo (35.71 deg N, 139.49 deg N) from ETS II at 130 deg E form the data base for the study of various characteristics of nighttime anomalous enhancements in ionospheric electron content during the high sunspot years 1978 and 1979. The measurements correspond to a 300 km subionospheric point of 33.46 deg N, 138.72 deg N geographic latitude, and geomagnetic latitude of 23.16 deg N. The results are compared with those previously obtained for a low latitude Hawaiian station and with a few high latitude stations. The salient characteristics from the study are: (1) the nighttime enhancements occur mainly at post-midnight hours and in summer and equinox seasons, (2) the occurrence increases with sunspot activity, (3) the most probable amplitudes are 0.3 and 0.5 x 10 to the 17 per sq m, while the most probable durations are 180 and 90 min for post and pre-midnight cases, respectively, (4) both the mean amplitude and duration of pre-midnight events show semi-annual variation with equinoxial maxima, while those of post-midnight events show annual variation with summer maximum, and (5) the amplitude of the enhancements has a significant positive correlation with both background content and daytime peak content.
