A comparison of geomagnetic pulsation data recorded both by ATS-1 and on the earth surface has confirmed the existence in the magnetosphere of pulsations generated inside the magnetosphere and outside it (in the solar wind by protons accelerated in the magnetosheath). Most of the pulsations generated outside the magnetosphere seem to occur in the Pc3 range, while Pc4 pulsations seem to be generated inside the magnetosphere. The regular occurrence of Pc4 pulsations recorded at the satellite and their absence at the earth surface is explained by the generation of surface waves in the plasmapause, the generation of pulsations conditioned by the thickness of the plasmapause.
