The escape probability expressions for the statistical rate equations in a homogeneous slab of photoionized hydrogen are derived in a formal manner, including the effects of ionizing radiation (diffuse and external), without recourse to probabilistic arguments. Special attention is given to the case of extremely high radiation field intensities. Induced processes are included throughout instead of being introduced as 'corrections' at the end. The formalism can be easily extended to dealing with a slab which is partitioned into many slices.
