A new model which explains the external and internal features of solar spicules is presented. The generation and propagation of spicules as acoustic-gravity waves is discussed, including mass flux in the photosphere, the transition region, and the solar wind, the generation of spicules and macrospicules by inhomogeneities, and uniform motion along magnetic field lines in the low corona. The internal model accounts for the spicule height and lifetime and provides density and temperature profiles to compare with empirical data. It is shown that viscosity is the predominant dissipation process for an acoustic-gravity wave, and the effect of adiabatic wave compression on hydrostatic atmosphere is addessed.
