Time-lapse H-alpha observations of a peculiar type of prominence activation on October 7, 1981, are presented, and its morphological behavior is described. The prominence material seems to have originated from the photosphere as a huge twisted ropelike structure. It reached a height of about 100,000 km and later on split into braided closed looplike features which remained stable for a few minutes before breaking up at the top of the loop and finally fading out. The splitting of the twisted ropelike structure is explained on the basis of a screw-type instability in the current-carrying plasma column.
