Observations of the topside of the ionosphere made during three eclipses are presented. In two of them, during which the magnetic conditions were quiet, the electron concentration at all heights above 350 km decreased by a factor of two. This effect in the topside ionosphere is shown to be due predominantly to a downward movement of the layer rather than to any significant change in the peak electron concentration. During the recovery phase, which appears to last about 3 hr, the layer rises again. Data from the third eclipse, which coincided with a magnetic storm, show typical storm-time effects great enough to obscure the effects of the eclipse.
