An experimental investigation was performed to determine the nature of the focusing of short wave radio signals by the ionosphere. Amplitudes of radio signals propagating on a 1450 km path almost parallel to the magnetic equator were recorded and generally revealed fading except at the boundary of the dead zone where there was an increase in amplitude. Radio focusing was correlated with variations in the ionospheric electron density.
