A Michelson Interferometer for Coordinated Auroral Doppler Observations (MICADO) has been designed to observe winds and temperature in the mesosphere and thermosphere. MICADO is based on a thermally stable field compensated Michelson interferometer associated with a set of calibration sources and a moveable telescope. Emphasis is placed on wind observations in the thermosphere using the O(D-1) oxygen emission line in the F-region above Sodankyla (Finland). A mean model of F-region meridional, zonal, and vertical neutral wind components is presented as a function of magnetic activity and universal time. Comparisons with the empirical model based on Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements show good agreement for the two components of the horizontal wind.
