The occurrence is discussed of two distinct types of spread-F ionization observed by means of the Alouette 1 satellite. The boundary at the low-latitude edge of the zone of conventional high-latitude spread-F is shown to be very sharp and of large vertical extent, occurring substantially closer to the equator at night than by day. It has been suggested that, on some occasions, the conventional spread-F echoes observed on both topside and bottomside ionograms may be the result of a delayed resonance effect. Spread-F traces which appear to be produced by localized sheets or patches of ionization occur more frequently at night and also during magnetically disturbed conditions.
