Soft electron fluxes (E greater than 10 eV) were measured for consecutive orbits of OGO 6 within L ranges in the vicinity of the SAR (subauroral red) arc and for the period including the occurrence of the arc. In the light of the behavior of the electron flux during the arc development, it is believed that this event lends strong observational support to the hypothesis that soft electrons can be an excitation source for SAR arcs. In the case considered, the precipitation of the soft electron flux peaked at about the same location and time of occurrence as the SAR arc. The peak value was found to be 5.2 x 10 to the 18th per sq cm sec, which is more than adequate to excite the observed arc.
