The electron-resonance spikes on the Alouette 1 ionograms often exhibit distinctive spurs, and these are suggested to be a proton gyro-effect of some kind. The absolute values, and also the latitude variation, of the total magnetic intensity derived from the spurs on the assumption that they are a proton gyro-resonance effect agree with the actual values of magnetic intensity to about one per cent, which is better than the estimated accuracy of measurement. The occurrence of the spurs is shown to be closely associated with the satellite orientation.
