A study of auroral ionospheric cavities is presented in which narrow field-aligned density depletions are described in both a statistical and a case study framework. Ground-based 6300 A and satellite UV images indicate that for a one-hour case study of January 24, 1987 the cavity tracks the poleward boundary of the midnight oval. Cavity formation by enhanced chemistry, vertical diffusion, advection of horizontal plasma gradients, and field-aligned currents has been assessed using high-time resolution radar scans that allow an estimate of formation times and evaluation fluxes to be made.
