The characteristics of gravity waves as observed by Doppler sodar and generated in the turbulent nocturnal boundary layer are analyzed and discussed. The modifying effects of nocturnal cooling on dynamic stability are pointed out. After an analysis of waves observed in one location, waves observed during MESOGERS 84 experiment at several locations with Doppler sodars are examined. Special emphasis is given on relationships between waves and turbulent mixing. A particular point is made on the importance to take into account the drag coefficient associated with atmospheric gravity waves.
