The microscale processes occuring within a quasiperpendicular shock are responsible for the redistribution of energy observed at the shock (e.g. particle heating and acceleration). Various models have been proposed to explain the mechanisms occurring. These models depend upon the scale size over which the process operates. This has implications on the scale size of the ramp region. The typical scale size for the ramp region in quasiperpendicular shocks is assumed to be of the order of c/ωpi. An example of a shock whose scale size is much smaller than this has been studied by Newbury and Russell. Its thickness was attributed to the fact that it was a perpendicular shock (ΘBn ≈ 90°). This paper presents the results of the spatial size of ramp region for thin quasi-perpendicular shocks encountered by AMPTE-UKS and AMPTE-IRM and discusses the implications this imposes for the processes that may possibly operate within them.
