A major stratospheric sudden warming occurred in the Northern Hemisphere during late December 1984, one of the earliest times such an event has been observed during winter. The seasonal evolution of the stratospheric circumpolar vortex during this winter is strongly affected by this disruption, particularly in the lower stratosphere, and normal midwinter conditions are not reestablished until mid-February. The anomalous postwarming state has a pronounced effect on the vertical propagation of planetary waves from the troposphere.
