Among the instruments on the Cosmos-1809 satellite launched on December 18, 1986 was the SF-3M low-energy electron and ion spectrometer, in which energy analysis was accomplished with a toroidal electrostatic analyzer, while a VEU-7-2 secondary multiplier served as the detector. The instrument and its calibration are described and examples of the results obtained with it are given. The main drawback of analyzers of this type is the strong defocusing of detected particles, especially electrons. Because of their small size and weight, however, such instruments can still find application, although interpretation of the results requires additional analysis. A similar instrument will be mounted, in particular, on the Auroral Probe satellite (INTERBALL project).
