Pancake Simulations
Scientific paper
After decades of investigation, galaxy and large scale structure formation processes are still not well understood. Zeldovich's pancake scenario provides some possible solutions to these problems. We investigate the pancake fragmentation process in a dark matter dominated universe through numerical simulations. We modified the hydrodynamical code ZEUS-2D to include the expansion of the universe and radiative cooling of the gas and combined it with a particle-mesh code which follows the motion of dark matter particles. A series of linear perturbation tests were performed to check the accuracy of our code, and the results demonstrate that the code is accurate and stable. We ran a series of 1-D pancake simulations involving dark matter only, gas only and both dark matter and gas. The results proved to be consistent with previously published work. In the 2-D pancake simulations, the initial pancake fragmentation gives fragments of size ~ 12.5 kpc which is about three times the result estimated from the gravitational (Jeans) instability by Sunyaev and Zeldovich. We find that the coupling between the cooling and gravitational instabilities plays an important role in the pancake fragmentation process. We present a tentative theory for this coupling.
