An asymptotic solution of the wave equation is used to determine the
field structure of short waves in a parabolic ionospheric layer. A
vertical field distribution is obtained taking into account the
diffraction structure at the caustic. Finally, an analysis is presented
of the upper and lower branches of the caustic up to its peak.
