Rapid-neutron-capture processes in explosive astrophysical environments lead to the production of nuclei far away from β-stability. It is shown at the examples of solar and meteoritic isotopic anomalies around 48Ca and for the observed r-abundance peaks at A˜80 and 130, that an understanding of the nucleosynthesis in such environments is intimately related to an understanding of the nuclear-structure properties of far-unstable nuclei.
