This paper presents an overview of soviet planning for manned and
unmanned missions to Mars. The feasibility of designing a propulsion
system based on a nuclear power reactor with a turbomachine converter of
50 MW electric power is discussed. The problems related to radiation
shielding are presented.(AIP)
