I will discuss the importance of nuclear physics, especially that far from stability, to the explosion mechanisms of supernovae and their nucleosynthesis. I will review recent progress in the modeling of core collapse supernovae. The current failure of models with accurate neutrino transport to produce explosions highlights the need to improve the nuclear physics that serves as input to these models. I will discuss the current shortcomings in the models and efforts underway to remedy them.
