The natural remanent magnetization (NMR) of different parts of the Allende (CV3) chondrite have been measured, in order to find a magnetic record of the early solar system. The measurements were carried out using a second gradient magnetometer in a centimeter sized dark inclusion, its surrounding matrix, and in individual chondrules. Stepwise thermal demagnetization showed that all the regions have a low- and high temperature component. The lower temperature component appears to be carried by pyrhotite. The directions of the high temperature component of NRM in the chondrules and in the bulk matrix specimens were scattered almost at random. On the basis of the NRM data, it is shown that: (1) the chondrules and inclusions in Allende were magnetized before accretion, so they should provide a good record of the early solar system magnetic fields; and (2) the entire rock was partially magnetized after accretion by a thermochemical event.
