It is argued by consideration of the principle of conservation of energy that curvature is the local source of Hawking radiation, at least in a space-time with spherical symmetry. The formula for Hawking radiation in two-dimensional 'spherical' space-time is given and the renormalized stress-energy tensor of Hawking radiation is computed for a few physically interesting cases.
