This paper is intended as a preliminary aid to the design and operation of optical geodetic stations. General requirements for the camera system needed in such a station are: (1) camera requirements - a satisfactory camera should have a focal length of at least 40 cm, a linear aperture of 10 cm, and a field of view at least 5° X 10° (2) camera mounting requirements - the mount should be free of vibration by providing solid mounting piers, adequate wing protection, seperation of the floors of the building from the mount base, and remote control of the camera; and (3) timing requirements - timing of an observation must be sufficiently accurate to determine the finally located position of the observing station to about 10 m.
