For seven selected magnetically quiet days in 1955 and 1958 synoptic analyses of Sq by 3-hr intervals have been made. The representative current patterns show a persistent NS asymmetry, in the sense that the southern vortex lags behind the northern vortex, sometimes as much as 60°. The mean lag over the selected days was greatest in August 1955 (48°) and least in January 1955 (6°). It was greater in September 1958 (27°) than in April 1958 (15°). The intensities of the vortices were very high in 1958. Their quantitative relation with sunspot numbers is considered. The possible causes of the asymmetry and its yearly variation are discussed. It is concluded, after considering the factors that determine Sq, that the ionospheric wind system is the least improbable to be the carrier of the asymmetry. The fact that the yearly variation of the asymmetry shows a retardation with respect to season, points to a relation with the state of the lower atmosphere.
