The problem of nonstationary reconnection of magnetic lines of force is solved in the context of the Petschek approach. A solution is found in quite simple form in Cartesian coordinates. Considered are the development phase, in which the nonstationary reconnection is much like the Petschek model, and the separation phase in which the FR regions are propagated as self-contained solitary objects. Discussed are the relations of the reconnection process with the "slingshot" model, with the electromagnetic "fire", the decay of an arbitrary discontinuity, the longitudinal current model, transport processes, and the change in flow topology.
