The CHAMP mission terminated 19 September 2010 when the satellite re-entered at an altitude of ~150 km. Therewith also the longest ever available time series of upper thermospheric zonal winds ended. This unique data set spans from June 2001 - August 2010 providing us with nine years of continuous and globally distributed wind measurements in the altitude range from ~450 km at the beginning of the mission to ~250 km in the final days. In this paper we present the longitudinal modulations of the zonal wind by nonmigrating tides at equatorial and mid-latitudes. Thereby special emphasis is put on the eastward propagating diurnal tides with zonal wavenumber 2 (DE2) and 3 (DE3). We show the inter-annual variation as well as the dependence on solar activity. Furthermore the findings are compared to measurements made at 100 km altitude and to the results of a physics-based empirical model based on Hough Mode Extension fits to TIMED tides which closes the gap between the measurements in the mesosphere, lower thermosphere and upper thermosphere. While the agreement between the measurements and the model are very good concerning DE3, there are differences for DE2. An unexpected result are the observed strong DE3 amplitudes in December 2008/January 2009 showing comparable magnitude to the DE3 peak amplitudes in the early years of the mission. We discuss a possible explanation for this anomalous variation during December solstice months when a vanishing of the DE3 tide is expected.
