The deviation of the critical frequency of the F2 layer from its mean value (delta-foF2) is a characteristic of the ionospheric disturbance, the development of which in time and space is studied in the present paper. An empirical model of the development of the ionospheric disturbance is obtained by breaking down the variation of delta-foF2 into diurnal variations and storm-time variations. A spectral analysis of DI-variations, observed at a number of stations, revealed a nonlocal nature of the spectral peaks. The observed correspondence between these periods and the oscillation periods in the AE-index spectrum is seen to fortify the concensus that changes in auroral electrojet intensity may be responsible for the irregular fluctuations of delta-foF2.
